Royal Caribbean passenger dead after jumping off world’s largest cruise ship

A man who jumped off Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas over the weekend has been pronounced dead, officials said.
The unidentified man jumped from the world’s largest 1,200-foot-long ship – which holds 7,600 passengers and 2,350 crew members – shortly after leaving Florida for a week-long voyage to Honduras on Sunday morning, the Coast Guard told The New York Post.
“The cruise ship deployed one of their rescue boats, located the man and brought him back aboard,” the Coast Guard explained.
“He was pronounced deceased,” it added. “Beyond assisting in the search, the US Coast Guard did not have much involvement in this incident.”
Around 25 passengers jump over board cruise ships annually, per Cruise Hive.
The group also reports that the ship was only about 300 miles from Port Miami at the time of the incident.
The ship stopped for approximately two hours while crew members helped the Coast Guard in its search and rescue mission.
A spokesperson for Royal Caribbean told the Daily Express US that the ship’s crew “immediately notified the U.S. Coast Guard and launched a search and rescue operation.”
“Our Care Team is actively providing support and assistance to the guest’s loved ones during this difficult time,” it said in a statement. “For the privacy of the guest and their family, we have no additional details to share.”
The jumper was brought back onboard in critical condition, however, he ultimately did not survive, the report said.
Other guests took to social media sharing videos of the rescue mission, where rescue boats were seen heading to retrieve the passenger.
Some said they were shock that he was initially found alive.

The Icon of the Seas, the world’s largest cruise ship, took its maiden voyage in January of this year.
The ship has 20 decks, which is nearly the size of four city blocks.
It boasts a 17,000-square-foot water park with six waterslides and seven pools, including the 40,000-gallon Royal Bay, which is the largest pool at sea, and Absolute Zero, the largest ice skating rink at sea.
It also features a theater and a carousel, as well as over 40 restaurants, bars and lounges.
